Can a self confession be thrown out?

If the person confessed to a crime yet there was no evidence. lets say its a burglary and grand larceny charge, and the school pulled the person out of class so the investigator could question them? and if the person is 18. is confession enough for a conviction in this case? lets say its in the commonwealth of virginia, hypothetically
