What is the penalty for false declaration of ownership in pawn?

My friend was arrested this weekend for petty larceny and false declaration of ownership in pawn. I'm trying to find out what the possible penalties or fines might be so i can give his mom some kind of idea of what to be ready for. this is the second time he has been charged with petty larceny and the first time for the pawn thing. What are the best and worst case scenarios? Does he need a lawyer?
